I tend to find artists really early and become obsessed...like repeat songs for days obsessed and run and grab tickets to see them as soon as they come to New York.
That's how I found Birdy. A simple YouTube video of her singing Bon Iver had me instantly obsessed with her album, especially the spot on covers of 1901 and my favorite Young Blood.
Birdy is an old soul in a young body. Her music talks about love and heartbreak, something I am hoping she has not yet had to deal with at 16 years old because it's such a crushing moment.
The show was at Joe's Pub a venue that if you have not yet enjoyed, try to see something there immediately. The place can't hold more than about 100 people so you're right with the artist enjoying a glass of 12$ prosecco (yeah yeah) and a very chill atmosphere.
The crowd was varied and I can't even pinpoint an audience set similar. There were some young, like 12 year old, girls in the audience who were totally there to see Birdy as a singer, but more importantly as a role model. Much better than Exhibit A Kardashian and Exhibit B Cyrus in my opinion.
Video of her singing "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver below. She also performed "Learn Me Right", a song performed originally with Mumford & Sons which is just AMAZING. Listen to that here.
