The Evolution of my Download

I sat on my couch Saturday night with a glass of wine waiting for my friend to come over. I didn't feel like watching TV, so I turned on the Music Channel of "Top Hits" provided by the lovely people at Time Warner Cable.

For about six songs in a row, I held up my iPhone with the Shazam app compiling a list of songs to download once I turned on my laptop. I've used Shazam on the street when I heard a car blasting a Taylor Swift song, so using it in my own home wasn't that unusual.

An avid fan of last.fm and The Hype Machine, I usually don't hear the latest "hits" until I venture home to Long Island and drive around in the car. If by chance I see it on a TV show (ahem Glee) or a movie trailer (like this one), that's where I get my music.

Take this perfect example.
  1. Palm Pixie Commercial On TV
  2. Shazam the Song on my iPhone-Passion Pit, Sleepyhead
  3. Download on Laptop
  4. Post to my Tumblr
  5. Listen on Commute to Work
  6. Dance

Email: Making a comeback in my book

What do you think about email? Over the break I went through and hit the Unsubscribe button from about 20 newsletters I no longer needed. The newsletters that were more spammy and annoying got the boot.

I get my news/blogs/articles/information to read from a few places.
  1. Twitter
  2. Google Reader
  3. The source (I still go to nytimes.com in the morning---the Media Decoder Speed Read is my favorite daily read)
  4. Email newsletters
I still struggle to find the perfect method of getting the news I want, but lately email has been winning me over.

In a way, I can see how many RSS readers (still use them?) are similar/better than email newsletters. I use Google Reader a lot to read the latest going on. But still, as many agree, there's never enough time to read everything and I hate missing out on the great posts written by some really smart people. Also, it's another thing I have to do DO in order to get my news. I don't just get a push of the information, I have to sign into my reader and get it. My good buddy Chantelle shares a lot of what she's reading within Google Reader and I check them out because I love (and trust) her judgment on good material.

Ideally, I'd love to get my top Google Reader subscriptions in a daily email. Combine the two. One push to me and I'd read it and be on my way. There are some wrap ups that are starting to already do that for me. If there's a way for me to automate some of the other ones, I'd love to know.

Some daily/weekly email wrap ups I can't live without or have just started reading (and enjoy) below. Share yours in the comments please!

  • Netted by the Webbys:daily tech sites, startups, apps---you name it. Websites with a purpose. (Seriously, it's my favorite email of the day)
  • Fast Company. Take your pick at any of the newsletters. Tech Weekly is a fave of mine.
  • Urban Daddy. As they say, it's devoted to keeping you in the know.
  • Mashable's Daily Email. Keeping me in the know of the latest in social media in one comprehensive email. This is my morning read on the subway.
  • Charlie O'Donnell started sending out his Weekly NY Tech email. Basically, if you're active in the NY Tech scene or WANT to meet people in it, start with this email about what's going on each week.

I got you on candid camera

I was switching applications on my laptop during a call today and hit the "Take a Picture" button.

I guess this is a true image of my brain at work (and not posing). Look at the thoughts working inside my brain. That's magic happening there people.
