HubSpot released the State of the Twittersphere today (yay!) with some pretty interesting stats. The most interesting include:
- Twitter is dominated by newer users - 70% of Twitter users joined in 2008
- An estimated 5-10 thousand new accounts are opened per day
- 35% of Twitter users have 10 or fewer followers
- 9% of Twitter users follow no one at all
- There is a strong correlation between the number of followers you have and the number of people you follow
To go back to basics, when developing a PR strategy, one must think strategically around the day of the week that the news goes out. If it's good news, go out on a Monday or Tuesday. Get it right early in the week and use the rest of the week for follow up and analysis. Have bad news? Late Friday afternoon announcements will (OK---they'll TRY) to sweep it under the rug and go unnoticed.
Now we can use Twitter as another basis for our news cycle. To keep the buzz going using Twitter and WOM as a way to spread it virally, this chart supports the early in the week news date that will help keep the buzz going in the Twitterverse longer and target this community that will in turn also provide feedback.

I actually use the opposite strategy: it's better to drop bad news or bitch during peak hours because the tweet will disappear from your friends' stream more quickly, while good news on a Friday afternoon or weekend is likely to stick around longer and be seen by more people. What do you think?
I definitely like that strategy too. Depending on the audience, and whether Twitter IS the right audience for the news, it could end up working out better.
Either way, the strategy should focus around the news announcement and whether it's right for that particular outlet.
